Electromagnetically Shrunken Quarters

Electromagnetically Shrunken Quarters

The man at the carnival held out a minuscule coin.

"What I've got here," he said, "is the product of magic... dangerous and bright magic at that."

We peered at the coin and then raised an eyebrow.

"Actually, it looks like the product of electromagnetic forming."

What could the man say after that? Not much really, so we went on to explain the process just as we'll explain it to you.

When you were a wee geek, you probably took a coil of wire and wrapped it around a nail. You hooked up each end of the wire to a little 9v battery and then using the resulting electromagnet to pick up paper clips. Well, electromagnetic forming is the same basic concept except blown up to Tesla-like proportions (well, more of a byproduct of Faraday to be precise).

In a nutshell, electromagnetic forming is the result of cranking some scary high energy through a coil wrapped around a conductor. The coil gains a wicked magnetic field that's changing quite rapidly and imparts a magnetic field to the conductor via the "magic" of electromagnetic induction. The thing is that these two magnetic fields repel each other in a very violent way. If the power is sufficient and the experiment controlled, the coil explodes and the metal in the conductor is compressed.

This all happens in less than 1/100th of a second. A dangerous and bright magic indeed!

Product Specifications

•Real quarters zapped by 6,000 volts at 100,000 amperes

•The process takes less than 1/100th of a second

•Size: About diameter of a dime but twice as thick

•Yes, it's totally legal. Destroying money is only a crime if done with fraudulent

intent. This is just fun science.

DIY Music Box Kit

DIY Music Box Kit

Music boxes came to prominence in the 19th Century, but their history dates back a few hundred more years. You see, there was this bell ringing dude who got tired of all the hard work. So, he decided to engineer a device to make his life a little more hip. It was a cylinder with metal studs. Each stud (as the cylinder rotated) operated cams which rang the bells. Further research determined that the first song played on this new system was the theme to Super Mario Brothers!

And so that's the first song we made when we got our hands on this awesome little kit (albeit with one note wrong to adjust the key). This music box kit is a bit more open source, though. There are no pins, but a strip of paper, which you punch yourself. That's right, you punch all your own songs! No more listening to "Memory" - it's time for Koji Kondo's greatest hits (the genius behind many of Mario's and Link's most memorable themes). We'd love to chat more, but it's time for us to compose a lullaby for Princess Peach. Click here to download a PDF blueprint of the Super Mario Brothers theme. 'Cause sharing is caring. DIY Music Box Kit In Action!

Wooden Catapult and Trebuchet Kits

Wooden Catapult and Trebuchet Kits

In the days before gunpowder (at least in the west), folks had to find new and intriguing ways to throw death and destruction at each other. They started by throwing rocks, then progressed to hurling giant stones, and then to flinging boulders. The evolution of the machines used to accomplish this hurling is as intriguing as the things hurled. Many times trash and debris were lobbed over castle walls to rain down upon unsuspecting masses or invading armies.

These kits let you bring back all the fun of flinging. Each one can assemble in just a few hours, and provides a fantastic scale model of an actual war weapon of yore. The catapult is perfect for chucking balls of paper and other small objects over cubicle walls. The trebuchet is better for long range targets (like the water cooler or networked printer). And, all you need to put them together are some strong fingers (or pliers), a cutting tool, and glue (not included). Both kits are perfect for showing your love of retro weaponry.

Please Note: Though these kits are for educational purposes, they are functional. Care should be taken when constructing and using them. Don't use anything living as a target or projectile. Because kits must be glued together, opened kits are non-returnable.

Link on Epona Statue

Link on Epona Statue

"Oh, yeah, I have to introduce you to my friend, fairy boy! She's this horse. Her name is Epona. Isn't she cute?" — Malon

We have to admit that there was a small scuffle regarding which ThinkGeek employee got to keep this product sample. By small scuffle, we mean only a couple people got black eyes and broken ribs. Thankfully, our hologram doctor was able to make everyone better. In the end, Willie won, because he is a ninja with a biker beard and a mean left hook.

This statue is worth punching someone over. It is that awesome.

Size: The first thing you'll notice is that this item comes in a box that requires two hands to carry. The statue is a whopping 17 inches tall and weighs over 16 pounds. You will need to clear off a significant amount of space in your display cabinet and maybe even move some shelves around in order to accommodate its massive awesomeness.

Craftsmanship: Link and Epona are cast in high quality polystone and are hand-finished. You're going to want to run your fingers over all the tiny details, from the tip of Link's pointed cap to the grass under Epona's feet.

Details: Each piece is hand-painted, which makes this no mere "figure." This is a work of art and will command attention wherever you put it in your home or office. Every little detail is here, from Epona's decorative barding to the look of lost innocence in Link's eyes. Epona's coat even seems to glisten as if she's headed from one battle right into the next.

Collecting toys is fun, but every once in a while, a piece of art like this comes along that blows them all away. Serious fans of the Legend of Zelda will treasure this piece for years to come. If you want it, grab those rupees now, because there are only 2500 pieces worldwide and ThinkGeek only has a small number of them.

Product Specifications

•The ultimate gift for any Legend of Zelda fan

•Link on Epona statue, from the Master Arts line of Twilight Princess Centerpieces

•Epona rears back on her hind legs, ready to charge into battle

•Cast in high quality polystone, individually painted and finished to exacting

standards •Comes in deluxe, full-color packaging, with hand numbered base, and includes an Authenticity Card

•Limited Edition: Only 2500 pieces worldwide (and ThinkGeek only has a small number of those)

•Dimensions: 17" tall x 16" long

BioMetal Fiber Walking Robot Inchworm

BioMetal Fiber Walking Robot Inchworm

All killer robots have to start somewhere. What will eventually one day be a muscle made of BioMetal Fiber capable of lifting humans into the air and crushing their skulls with one arm must have a beginning. And that beginning is the BioMetal Fiber Walking Robot Inchworm. We love this little walker; read on to find out why!

Each BioMetal Fiber Walking Robot Inchworm has one strand of BioMetal Fiber. When current is applied, the fiber heats up and contracts. This pulls the Inchworm's feet apart. When the current is stopped, the fiber cools and expands. Add a little grippy fabric on the bottom of each foot and the spring to return it to its original position, and you can easily see how the little inchworm can walk along most non-slick surfaces. The BioMetal Fiber Walking Robot Inchworm is a great desktop toy, but it could also be the focus point of a killer science fair project. Remember, though, to treat your BioMetal Fiber Walking Robot Inchworm with respect - 'cause when it's great grandson of a killing machine comes around, you'll need all the good references you can get!

BioMetal Fiber Walking Robot Inchworm

•One strand of BioMetal Fiber is all that it takes to get this inchworm strolling.

•The BioMetal Fiber works like muscle fiber - when it heats up, it contracts.

•Heat up the fiber by applying electrical current.

•A great desk toy and a super awesome science fair project.

•The inchworm's single fiber muscle is sort of like a precursor to the muscles in Terminators!

•BioMetal Fiber is about 0.15mm in diameter.

•Batteries: 2 x AA (not included)

•Dimensions: approx. 1.75" x 1.5" x 0.44" (no current) - with a 19" (approx.) leash wire.

Paper Airplane Doorstop

Paper Airplane Doorstop
Paper airplanes are the perfect distraction for the bored. With every office and workspace filled with scraps of paper, many of them printed with the meaningless memos of the day, you've got everything you need for a little action, adventure, and origami. Just fold, crease, fold, crease and toss, and you've got a fighter jet! A space ship! A hypersonic bomber! A doorstop!
Wait, what? A doorstop? Follow me, here, 'cause we're gonna get crazy here. The wedge shape of your typical needle-nose paper airplane is the perfect shape to jam in between a door and the floor. Unfortunately, a folded sheet of paper's ability to effectively stop a door from moving is limited, to say the least.
Recognizing the perfect shape of the paper airplane, engineers replaced the flimsy paper construction with durable ABS plastic. With the added strength of science, the airplane wedges in nicely, and keeps the heaviest door from slamming shut.
We don't recommend you try to fly it, though. While it's the right shape for flight, the lift over the wings isn't quite great enough to overcome the added weight that comes with the hardened plastic construction. It is the price to pay for immobile doors.
Features •Paper-Airplane shaped doorstop
•Made of plastic, not paper!
•8 1/4 inches long by 4 inches wide
•Keep your doors in a... holding pattern! Get it?!

Star Wars In Your Pocket

Star Wars In Your Pocket

We can't think of a situation that can't be improved by the addition of sound effects from the Star Wars In Your Pocket keychain. Giving a tough assignment to your minion? Send them off with "Do, or do not. There is no try." (This reminds them that if they do not, they also do not get a paycheck.) Have a friend going through a hard time? "Remember, the Force will be with you. Always." Need help from a wise old man? "Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope." Pretty sure all is lost? "We're doomed!" Ready to kick butt and take names? Lightsaber sounds give you +2 to buttkicking. Need to make a phone call to a girl and you're pretty sure you won't get up the guts to say anything when she answers? Darth Vader's breath will cover the sound of your stress-induced coronary quite nicely.

We're sure you can think of thousands of situations in your life that need just a little more Star Wars. The sound bites in the Star Wars In Your Pocket keychain come straight from the classic movies and will increase the amount of awesome in your life by an amount we really aren't equipped to calculate.

Doctor Who Time Lord Psychic Container

Doctor Who Time Lord Psychic Container

When a Time Lord needs to send a message, technologies like pony express or email just won't do. The psychic container is where it's at: every bit of your message conveyed in exactly the way you meant it to be heard and felt by the recipient. Of course, if it's a bad message, then the sight of the little flying box is not a welcome one.

This replica of the psychic container features motion-sensitive light changing effects. Tap the top to turn on the white glow. Tap again for white flickering mode (the most psychic-looking of the effects, in our opinion!), and tap yet again to go into color mode which cycles through a rainbow of colors. The Mark of the Corsair graces the front, reminding us that a Time Lord is eternal. The Doctor Who Time Lord Psychic Container makes a fun desk accessory or a nifty night light for your bedside table.
